Bunker Dweller
Long ago, prior to the final wars, many
corporations and government agencies built secret, self
sustaining underground bunker complexes. They used these
bases to house their technicians, politicians, corporate
elites, military officers, and soldiers, along with the
families of these essential personnel, in safety.

Caravaneer
Similar to a nomad or animal herder, these
caravan workers are also referred to as teamsters. They
are hard-working men and women who work with teams of
horse, oxen, mules or other mutant draft animals or
machines, and mainly pull wagons and carts from one
community to another. They might spend days if not weeks
along the old, broken highways of the oldsters, back
country dirt tracks and other paths, but unless living
in their wagons themselves, do actually have a home in
one or more communities where their families tend to
reside.

Carpenter
Wood workers of the post-apocalyptic new era
are always welcome in a new community, work camp, wagon
train or aboard a new era barge or sailing ship.
Carpenters can do math, although most of this arithmetic
pertains to measurements of wood, angles of cuts, and
how many lengths of this or that piece of timber is
needed to build a specific object, piece of furniture or
structure.

Cultist
This character grew up in a strict religious
sub-culture within a larger community or in a
theologically homogeneous settlement. The so-called cult
could be anything from a totally new faith all the way
to an off-shoot of an old world religion. The term
cultist isn’t usually what this character would call
themselves, but rather a devotee, disciple, adherent,
convert, chosen one, or believer, and it’s outsiders who
label this character a cultist. Some of the Epochian era
cults are focused on love, healing and forgiveness,
while at the opposite extreme, many are obsessed the
dark gods, metal deities and devils of folklore and
pre-cataclysmic times.

Fuel Keeper
Besides knowing about a wide range of
ancient fuel sources, this highly valued member of a
community is an expert in creating all-important ethanol
fuel. They can select the best crops, fermentation
techniques, and storage solutions to produce 3 to 18
(3d6) liters of the stuff per week, so long as the
supplies and facilities to do so are available.

the purely scientific nurse or doctor role, all the way

Cybernetic
Like the junk doctor caste, this pre-game profession is
also a skill as described on page 207 of this book. This
character has either served as an apprentice — if having
only 1 or 2 skill points in cybernetics technician —
otherwise, if having 3 or 4 points in this skill, will
most likely have once run their own implant purchasing,
collecting, repair, and attachment service. While this
character mainly trained as a cybernetics expert, they
might have other prominent skills or interests, too, and
walked away from the implant insertion trade. More
commonly, however, this technician is obsessed with
cybernetic technologies and so yearns to search for new
parts, specimens, and tools. This obsession compels them
to join an excavation team to undertake perilous
expeditions into the old places to seek new implants, or
else get access to cyborg companions to study, enhance,
and repair.

Scavenger
While normally loners who live on the edge of vast
ruined cities, or among the wrecks of former
battlefields and industrial zones, scavengers are
commonly encountered by excavators and nomadic traders,
who will barter with these wasteland hermits. Typically,
scavengers will trade important information about a
local stretch of ruins or road in return for food,
tobacco, marijuana or booze. On some occasions,
travelers might discover that the scavenger has a mate,
and one or more children. These kids grow up to be
resourceful, half wild things themselves, but because of
their exposure to dig teams, many develop an obsession
with both the caste of diggers and the distant towns and
barter forts the ruin looters come from.

Teacher:
This character taught youngsters in the basics of math,
reading, writing and scientific principles. If it was
permissible in his or her community, the instruction of
ancient history up until the cataclysm would also have
been taught — although what this teacher knows to be
true might differ greatly from what really happened. The
instructor might also share what he or she knows about
ancient animals, religions, geography and literature.

Wastelander:
Often seen as some sort of barbarian, or uncivilized,
dangerous loner, those of the wastelander caste clearly
dislike extended stays in towns or walled compounds. In
some ways, they are like scavengers and savages both,
and yet embrace technology, especially relic firepower
and oldster vehicles, and will gladly work within a
larger team of excavators, mercenaries of warriors to
accomplish some task. This cooperation works only so
long as it fits in with the wastelander’s need to keep
wandering the wastes, exploring old places and
uncovering ever more powerful weaponry, armor and
technology. In some respects, they are the ultimate
candidate for becoming a digger, however will not settle
down within the confines of some barter town or new era

this person’s priority in life centered on the booze

Besides being the local drunk or addict, this character
was also likely a petty criminal, prostitute, or
compulsive gambler and card cheat. The amount of trouble
this troublemaker caused in their home town — and is
still likely to cause should the chance arise to make a
big score, splurge their earnings on hookers, drugs,
alcohol and cards — is 67% likely to have followed them

well. If you’re new to The Mutant Epoch and want an
explanation of experience factors and rank advancement,
we encourage you to read the brief write up on page
TME-34, however a word on Experience factors is in
order.
Some say that it is too easy to go up in rank, or level
up, in The Mutant Epoch and Outland System, especially
compared to other popular role-playing games. Indeed,
going from first rank to second rank can be rather
swift. The reasoning behind this is that to gain the 60
experience factors needed do so means a newbie
post-apocalyptic character must survive several brutal,
potentially deadly fights. For example, imagine
surviving a hand to hand battle with a black bear, EFs
(Experience Factors) 50, or fending off several
ferocious mutant dogs (EFs 18 each) or a whole 1st rank
party enduring the onslaught of a mutant giant known as
a garnock (pg TME-156 with 125 Efs).

Abomination
Art from page 25 of The Mutant Epoch RPG Expansion
Rules book
Originally grown in vats, abominations are mutant
miscreations who were designated with alpha-numeric
identities: a mix of manufacturer’s code, batch number,
purpose, and quality and were initially mindless, group
thinking, slavish followers of a collective. Those
gifted with fertile genitalia bred with other foul,
unlikely scientific mistakes and oddities to form a new
line of independently minded creatures.
The name ‘abomination’ seemed to stick, however, instead
of their product ID, and in time, even their creators
called them by the name they are now known by.
Civilians, politicians and activists had less flattering
names for these life forms, especially once these fleshy
brutes began to see deployment against enemy troops,
street mobs, rioters, mutants and other entities.
Present day scribes and researchers have uncovered only
a few pre-collapse names for these ghastly miscreations,
such as blobs, rubber devils, fleshies, globulurs,
gobbies, dough monsters, and flesh puddings.

Abomination 2
Hand drawn ink art from page 26 of The Mutant Epoch
RPG Expansion Rules book
The DNA of an abomination is a blend of custom
manipulation, happy accidents, and that of animals and
humans, the results often pitiful, and always sickening
to behold. They have been described as bags of flesh and
organs, dotted with orifices and appendages, sensory
parts, heads, limbs, and discolored patches of hair,
scale, or horn, the whole mess further dotted with open
sores that are barely distinguishable from nostrils,
mouths or mating orifices.
While hideous, hated and typically shunned, some exhibit
traits which make them indispensable members of raiding
parties, ship’s crews, merc squads and ruin exploration
teams. Bristling with often gruesome yet deadly
appendages, armored plating, and a blend of offensive
and defensive mutations, they can be fearsome and valued
comrades. Of course, stemming from blended DNA and often
growing up as ill treated filth, they tend to have
bizarre personalities, odd illnesses and one or more
flaws.

Android Player Character Type
All new for The Mutant Epoch RPG
Differing from a digital being, these entities are more
self contained, exhibit hard-wired CPUs and a more
independent nature, blending the best of a physical
robotic body and stand-alone digital brain. Like living
humans, however, they are very mortal. Typically, when
their head is destroyed, they are erased and lost
forever. Also like humans, who their creators wished to
emulate as much as possible, unique androids can learn
as they endure the ordeals of the twisted new world,
improving their skills, enhancing their mechanical body,
and advancing as other intelligent beings do.

Android Character, skinless
Skinbots are immune to many of the hazards of organic
beings, including drowning, venom, poison gas, and
mental attacks such as telepathy, mind crush, mental
dominion and the like. Androids, like cyborgs and
robots, are however highly vulnerable to electromagnetic
pulse attacks or EMP, some electricity shooting
mutations and relics, as well as being hacked and taken
over by hostile artificial intelligences and digital
beings. Often, a digital being is housed in the body of
an android, and both the digital being and an android
body must be rolled using two separate character sheets
to construct one character.
Android characters do not feel pain, are immune to
mental attacks that afflict a living brain, and if
decapitated, and utterly lose their body, they are still
considered alive and their head can be collected and
either carried about like a talkative computer and pet,
or eventually put onto the body of a different android
or robot — although this is a tricky procedure handled
best by very talented NPC robotics technicians. When
reduced below zero endurance, or its willpower or
intelligence trait are drained below zero, the android
becomes dormant until repaired — or self-healed in some
cases — and can survive in low battery mode for 1d100+6
years before its CPU suffers some irreversible
corruption and is deleted. If the head of an android is
incinerated, crushed, or shot apart, then it is dead.

Civilian androids were mass produced and easily the most
commonly found models that dig teams unearth. These
humanoid robots usually had plastic bones — although
many featured fully biodegradable sheathing, bones and
parts which have long since decayed into dust.
This unique android, however, is built different from
other models. It is either a customized variant, from a

purpose-built and perhaps one of a kind design.

Do You Want Fries with That a Service Industry
Android
Among the most common androids ever made were the fast
food variants, many of whom had skin pigmentation in the
logo colors of the company that purchased them, although
their plastic skin is usually incomplete and most
exhibit purposely visible joint seams, servo motor and
access panels. Many were made without legs, and instead
moved about the front counter at a burger joint or pizza
house on a track. They are almost always built to look
like teenagers and have the same mannerisms and vocal
range of humans aged 14 to 19. Some, 1 in 20, were built
in the likeness of a fast-food joint’s mascot, animal
character, clown or other corporate persona — which
while comical looking, these brightly colored, funny
talking and oddly shaped individual units rarely survive
long in the brutal post-apocalyptic world of the Mutant

Concubine Android: These pleasure focused
androids were among the most common varieties of
androids ever made. While other models were produced in
far larger numbers, such other designations and designs
were often wiped out in greater numbers than concubine
units. Military models, for example, saw action on both
the side of anti-human Mecha AIs and human forces, while
many industrial units were destroyed in bombings,
terrorism, accidents or hazardous duties.
Household
androids as well as service industry models were
likewise wiped out because they were easy to detect as
non-humans, and eliminated by those who feared all
machines. Concubine androids survived into the new era
in greater numbers than expected because so many passed
as humans, or else belonged to a human who concealed and
protected the unit out of either financial
considerations, lust, or emotional reasons. In short,
concubine androids of old were nearly always the
property of an individual, not a government or
corporation, and so hidden away and cared for, often
because their owner had developed a relationship with
the sexy, always attentive and empathetic machine.

Criminal Construct Android: This unit was made to
look like some other common model, and in most cases
uses the frame of a personal companion android. It was,
however, upgraded and customized by either
revolutionaries, insurgent forces, political outcasts,

character in the Epochian age, this is the most
practical model for a post-apocalyptic world.

Personal Attendant Android
These androids were often the everyday companion of a
well-to-do ancient person, such as a business owner,
musician, film star, popular writer, or other person of
some renown. These units served as confidants, porters,
biographers, secretary, media-liaison, butler, maid and

a passable lover and always have fully operational,
reproductive organs applicable to their gender, but
would also fulfill the role as body guard should the
need arise.

Government Clerk Android
Even in the Epochian era, these variants of clerical
models are always sticklers for rules and regulations,
and if confronted with a query or task that is even
remotely outside their area of expertise or perceived
department, they will direct the inquirer to another
person or facility, or require the person asking to fill
out a non-existent form or supply some sort of
government identification.

Barista Android
These popular variants of the service industry android
worked for many popular coffee shop chains. They were
exceptionally knowledgeable about the varieties of
coffee, tea and pastries, masters at an espresso bar
machine, and maintained a friendly, customer focused
disposition even when overworked and the lineup was out
the shop’s door.

Homeless and Addiction Outreach Officer (HAOO)

became cheaper and more prevalent, people found
themselves on the streets. Strangely, it was machines
who also came to tend to the victims of addiction and
homelessness.

Waifu Android
While most other civilian androids look like pure stock
humans, this variety features proportions, mannerisms
and speech styles based on Japanese female anime
characters. As far as new era scholars can guess, the
word ‘Waifu’ supposedly stems from the Japanese word for
wife among adherents of ancient anime culture. It is
suspected that these were built for long ago otaku and
weeaboo — western terms for fans of anime and manga.
While new era people may not know why these always
female androids were made to look like they do, or why
they frequently act like little girls even though they
are typically built like erotic escort concubine models,
waifu androids are highly prized by the owners of
brothels, saloons, and the private chambers of new era
warlords.

Target Range Objective Android
As the name implies, this android was designed for use
by law enforcement and military personnel in seek and
destroy training. Such androids were often production
line rejects, or else exhibited a glitch, homicidal
streak, or were unable to comply with their prior
owners. Others were turned into moving targets because
they were obsolete models from other industries, insane,
witnesses to a crime or political shenanigans, or thrown
together from an assortment of other androids and bought
on clearance.

Medical Android
Among all the surviving android varieties to wander the
torn world of the Mutant Epoch, the medical android is
the most prized by humankind. Both small dig teams and
entire communities seek to either hire, enlist or
forcibly compel these models into their service,
although many times a standard medi-bot (described on
page TME-179) is more practical and better equipped.
A medical android is merely a very lifelike humanoid
robot without multiple arms or attachments. It depends
on its incredible knowledge of human physiology, a
well-equipped facility, medical supplies and new era
herbs, drugs and compounds to perform the seemingly
miraculous surgeries and cures that they are so well
known for.

Scientific Android
Unlike a technician android, these models were
programmed and physically customized to work in a
laboratory or fulfill some other dedicated scientific
role and exhibit a wider, more general inventory of
skills. They mainly served next to human and Ai
researchers but also worked alone, especially when
studying or creating viruses, bio-weapons, or other
substances that were too dangerous for human scientists
to contend with. They are built with lean, agile bodies
patterned after mature men and women, and feature
mannerisms, interests and vocabulary similar to that of
a well educated, subject obsessed scientist. Many of
these units were made by human exterminating Mecha
artificial intelligences to perform experimentation on
human captives, cross breeding programs and the creation
of cyborg slave-soldiers. For this reason, scientific
androids are usually loathed by humans, and watched with
extra care.

Industrial Android
Considered as little more than human shaped forklifts,
dumb brutes, and expendable machines of the factory
floor, these laborers were however built tough. Besides
their strength, robustness and compulsion to work hard,
many unique specimens feature one or more useful traits
and skills. Besides the fore mentioned attributes, these
bulky, typically metal boned humanoid machines are
rugged enough to hold their own in a post-apocalyptic
world. They normally appear as males but both genderless
and female specimens are also found.

Technician Android
As their name implies, these androids specialize in one
main technician skill area, but often have minor
qualifications in other skills, too. They were
originally designed to serve alongside either industrial
or scientific models, but were widely dispersed
throughout the old world. Of course, with their
knowledge and access to essential services, those that
were corrupted by the Mecha caused devastating damage to
the infrastructure of human cities and industry, and
left vast swaths of the human population without food,
water, heat, virtual reality up-link, air conditioning
and power.

Sniper Military Android
As their name implies, these stealthy, modestly sized
units appear as males or females of exceptional fitness,
although not large and so are more easily able to blend
in with a civilian population. Masters of camouflage,
concealment and marksmanship, these deadly units make
for exceptional new era excavators. Each has 1d4 skill
points in each of the following skills: stealth, Lock
picking, tracking, climbing and the sniper skill. 77% of
these units have built in standard communicator in their
heads and like the covert android, can carry on
conversations within their head with other operators
without being heard by nearby personnel. Sniper androids
have built in telescopic vision with which they can see
40 times further than a human by day and 10 x further at
night, with advanced night vision optics built into
their eyes.

Grunt Military Android
By far these are the most common military androids ever
made, and easily the most frequently discovered variant
in the post-apocalyptic new era. Built solid, with
access to plenty of spare parts from all those of their
classification who fell in long ago battles, they
exhibit an ideal balance of ruggedness, speed and talent
to bring the hurt to the enemy. Unique specimens of this
type make for exceptional excavators and can appear as
males or females, are always modeled after well built
human specimens of larger than average size, and besides
the hand signaling, Morse Code and navigate by stars
skills that all military androids already start with,
these units begin operations with 6 skill point rolls.

Heavy Combat Military Android
Once widely deployed on the sides of Mecha and human
factions of old, their large size made them stand out,
and so receive unwanted attention and multiple incoming
rounds. Few of these brutes now walk the twisted world
of The Mutant Epoch, but those that do are much feared,
well respected, and incredibly valuable assets to any
wasteland warlord or dig team. They stand at least a
foot (30cm) taller than a large man, are broad of chest
and shoulder and have enormous, cable knotted muscles.

Tanker Military Android
Although tough, these drivers of ancient armored
vehicles were built smaller, more agile and better able
to fit into, and move around inside many old world
vehicles. While nearly all such ancient tanks, armored
personnel carriers and battle trucks have long since
been destroyed — or else their fuel supply long since
dried up — many of these lean, highly skilled ‘tankers’
survived the ancient wars. These soldiers spread across
the world and now survive however they can. Because of
their more typical human proportions, many find
acceptance and concealment in human communities.

Pilot Military Android
Built light, agile, and of higher intelligence than most
other androids, these units were made in the both male
and female patterns in about equal numbers — and often
with enhanced appearance. While civilian android
co-pilots were used in old world airlines and inter-city
hover transports, primary piloting was done by trusted
human operators after several infamous incidents where
Mecha corrupted air crews took over flights. For the
military, however, the use of android pilots was
acceptable — at least in the early years of the End Time
Wars.

Space Force Android
These well built, advanced androids were used as
security and boarding troops during operations aboard
space stations and vessels, as well as deposited on the
ground on moons, asteroid mines, and other planets such
as Mars. Besides fierce combat in zero gravity or the
harshest of environments, they can handle the vacuum of
space, resit radiation, extreme cold or extreme heat,
and cope with long periods of dormancy. These units can
go dormant on minimal powers for 25 years, but if
activated by a ship’s main computer, a digital being, or
physical contact, they will power up and become fully
operational in 3d6 minutes.

Android Tissue Sheathing
Sheathing is the skin encasement around the android’s
body and face — at least where obvious cybernetic
implants are not affixed. A unique android might start
game play with the most advanced alloy cladding, a more
typical plastic sheathing, or be unlucky and have no
covering at all and all its servo motors, wiring,
pistons and underlying skeletal frame exposed. Androids
start with a base defense value of 0 (zero) just like a
human character, however apply any agility modifiers,
sheathing mods, or skill-based changes after the
character is created.
Sheathing, or a lack thereof, also affects the endurance
trait of the android so record any endurance amount
added or subtracted when establishing a sheathing type,
as this amount can change when skin is added or removed.
Only one sheathing type can be adhered to the android at
any given time.

Plastic Sheathing
While this skin might have a few scuff marks, a
well-hidden patch, stitched up cut, or puckered hole
where a bullet or arrow once caught this unit, this
flexible sheathing is stretchy and very human-like. In
short, it does the job of concealing the android’s true
nature from a few feet away. Such skin is about a
centimeter thick, except on the face where it must
better follow the contours of the synthetic skeletal
structure beneath. Although, quite realistic looking, it
has no warmth of its own and does not always bend the
way human skin does.

Polycarbonate Sheath Skin
While still flexible like skin, this covering is hard to
mistake as anything natural, and while it hugs the
contours of the body shape within, and seems to
pronounce any gender identifying physical attributes,
the skin itself is not warm, exhibits little subtleness
or responsiveness despite any amatory capabilities the
android might have. This skin is usually of some
unnatural color, and like ballistic mesh, is exhibits a
grid or diamond shaped pattern which sometimes reflects
light almost like fish scales.

CPU Within Androids Head
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) of an android is its
hard-wired, computerized brain and occupies the skull
cavity of the head. Other than a jury-rigged CPU
variety, listed in the table below, the computerized
brain housed in this android is fixed and can’t be
switched in and out without deleting the consciousness,
however, by gaining ranks, trait improvements can a
occur.
After randomly determining the CPU on the table below,
add any modifiers to Intelligence and willpower to any
gained through the unit’s original purpose, plus
whatever the android previously rolled at the start of
character generation. The character may yet gain more
points due to its pre-game caste.

Alloy Steel Cladding
This steel carapace is either black, gleaming chrome or
some sort of metallic metal, such as green, red or blue.
While the android encased in this two centimeter thick,
articulating armored shell might have the splendid
physique of a fit man or woman, there is no mistaking it
for a living human despite the appearance score of the
android. Other armor, and some special features that
might conceal this plating, can be worn with this
protective layer. The android housed in this sheathing
is immune to acid, dust storms, heat or cold damage, and
can operate in the void of space for up to an hour
before its joints and hydraulic lines freeze up. Fire
and falling do only half damage to this android.

8. Double Enhanced: Besides being able to
hear twice as well as a normal human, this android
can also detect the subtle sound of servo motors in
another mechanical being, especially if there are
few other sounds. For example, if another android,
when disguised as a human walks passed in a saloon
or back street, this character would detect it.
9. Extreme Hearing: Can hear four times as
well as a human, and with such splendid hearing,
this android gains +1 initiative.
10. Extreme Plus Radio Reception: Besides
being able to hear four times better than a regular
human, and so gain +1 initiative, this android can
also switch to a receptor mode and detect the feint
transmissions of various radio communications,
broadcasts and Mecha chatter. It cannot, however,
understand the Mecha encrypted messages, but can

Android Special Features
From the book: “As a character, a unique android will
have random traits, skills, implants and potential
features according to the tables that follow. All
androids can read, write and do math. At first, androids
can appear to be complex, hard to generate characters
based on the extensive amount of PC creation material
presented on the next 29 pages, however, creating one is
really quite simple and involves one or more rolls on

Unique Android Pre-Game Castes
In most cases, an android character has made its way in
the post-apocalyptic world by performing some task,
earning a wage, or being supplied with sufficient
recharge access, lubricants, repairs and shelter in
